Bondi Beach Community Honors Attack Victims with Traditional Paddle-Out Ceremony

Community Unites in Wake of Bondi Tragedy

In response to the devastating attack that occurred during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach last weekend, local residents and supporters came together in a powerful display of solidarity.

On Friday, a large crowd assembled at the beach for a ceremonial paddle-out, paying tribute to the 15 individuals who lost their lives, those injured in the shooting, and the families enduring profound loss. The gathering also recognized the courageous surf lifesavers who responded during last Sunday's violent incident.

Surfing Champion Reflects on Ceremony

Shaun Tomson, the 1977 world surfing champion known for his thoughtful perspectives, shared his thoughts on the traditional paddle-out and the broader implications of such events:

“The paddle out is the surfers' way of honoring the life of the departed, an emotional, respectful and warm goodbye based on the ethos that all surfers are joined by one ocean. Wishing that our divided and polarized society could somehow link arms and come together while floating atop the healing power of the ocean.

“I send love, prayers and sympathy to all the families and friends of those that were savagely taken from us and I pray for leaders to take action and for voters to hold their leaders accountable. The time for words is long gone. Don't let the heat of outrage cool. No more hate speech, no more indoctrination and no more intimidation.”

The ceremony served as both a memorial for those affected and a call for unity in challenging times.
