On Monday, conservative attorney George Conway submitted official paperwork to enter the Democratic primary race for the congressional seat currently held by Representative Jerry Nadler of New York, who is not seeking reelection.
Political Background and Trump Criticism
Conway, who was previously married to former Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway, has become a prominent critic of the former president. Though offered a position in the Trump administration during its first term, Conway declined the opportunity.
The relationship between Conway and Trump grew increasingly hostile over time. Trump once referred to Conway as a "stone cold LOSER & husband from hell," while Conway labeled Trump a "fascist" and authored an essay declaring him "unfit for office."
Political Activities
Conway co-founded The Lincoln Project, a political action committee composed of former Republicans with the stated mission of opposing Donald Trump. He has maintained his critical stance toward the former president through various media appearances and writings.
Speculation about Conway's potential candidacy began circulating last month after he confirmed hiring a Democratic pollster to assess his electoral prospects.
Crowded Primary Field
Conway joins a growing field of Democratic candidates vying for Nadler's Manhattan-based seat. At least ten contenders have filed for the position since Nadler announced in September that he would not seek another term.
Notable candidates include Jack Schlossberg, the only grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, March for Our Lives organizer Cameron Kasky, State Assembly members Alex Bores and Micah Lasher, and City Council member Erik Bottcher.
