A 37-year-old Detroit resident has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a Salvation Army volunteer at a Kroger supermarket in Westland.

Rene Zambrana appeared in court on Monday, December 22, facing charges of first-degree murder and felony firearm possession related to the December 18 incident that claimed the life of 47-year-old Alvin Echols.

Authorities from the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office have clarified that the two individuals were acquainted, countering initial speculation about a random attack. Echols' family confirmed to media outlets that the accused had been a longtime family friend.

Details of the Incident

On December 18 at approximately 6:20 p.m., Echols was collecting donations for the Salvation Army outside the Ford Road Kroger location when Zambrana approached him.

Prosecutors state that multiple gunshots were fired before the suspect fled the scene. Echols managed to enter the store but collapsed near the self-checkout area, succumbing to a single gunshot wound to his chest.

Westland police apprehended Zambrana in the early morning hours of the following day.

Official Statements and Legal Proceedings

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy addressed misinformation circulating about the case, stating: "The evidence will show that this was likely a complicated interpersonal relationship dispute. These allegations are nonetheless extremely tragic and criminal."

During his arraignment at Westland's 18th District Court, Zambrana was remanded to jail without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 30.

If convicted of the first-degree murder charge, Zambrana faces a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without parole.
