The Mechanicsburg Police Department reported that body-worn camera footage documented the rescue effort around 9 p.m. on Dec. 13.
The incident occurred while Champaign County was under a Level 2 Snow Emergency with below-freezing temperatures prevailing.
Both animals had broken through the ice covering a pond and were submerged up to their necks in the frigid water.
"Through teamwork, determination, and outstanding coordination, both horses were successfully recovered thanks to the hard work and dedication of all agencies involved," the department stated.
Multiple organizations worked together on the rescue, including Mechanicsburg police, fire department personnel, Champaign County Sheriff's Office deputies, and local community members.
