Arrest Made in Child Abuse Case
On December 17, law enforcement officials in Jacksonville took 32-year-old Michael Gregory Richter into custody. This action followed an inquiry into reports of child mistreatment.
School Staff Raises Alarm
The situation came to light when educators observed a student with fresh wounds on the face and neck. Initially, the child had presented with a bite mark from an altercation with another pupil, but additional injuries appeared the next day.
During the investigation, the child described being struck in the face with an open hand and having his neck grabbed, which caused breathing difficulties. The child also stated he was hit with a belt as a form of punishment at home.
Medical Examination and Legal Proceedings
A medical assessment revealed bruising and marks on the child's face, lip, and neck that were consistent with the reported incidents. The child was subsequently transported to Wolfson Children's Hospital for further medical attention.
When questioned by police, Richter stated, "he was only aware of an earlier bite mark from a school incident" and claimed "he no longer used physical discipline." He also mentioned that his work schedule limited his time at home.
Richter faces a felony charge of aggravated child abuse. Jail records indicate he was released on bond on December 19.
