Historic Inauguration: Mary Sheffield Set to Become Detroit's First Female Mayor

Historic Ceremony Scheduled for January 9

Detroit's mayor-elect Mary Sheffield is preparing for her official inauguration at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 9, at the Detroit Opera House. This event signifies a new era for Michigan's most populous city.

Landmark Achievement for Detroit

During the proceedings, Sheffield will make history by becoming the initial female mayor in Detroit's records. The ceremony will also include the swearing-in of recently elected City Council Members, Detroit Police Commissioners, and City Clerk Janice Winfrey. According to details from Sheffield's transition team, the event will showcase performances by Detroit poet laureate Jessica Care Moore, the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences, gospel artist Kierra Sheard, and Detroit Opera House soloist Brianna J. Robinson.

The inauguration is accessible to all residents. "The people of this city have been with me every step of the way. This isn’t just my moment—this is Detroit's moment and my administration will be the people’s administration," Sheffield stated.

Transition of Leadership

Sheffield succeeds Mayor Mike Duggan, who is now pursuing the position of Michigan's governor after twelve years leading Detroit. Duggan supported her campaign prior to the general election, where she decisively won against Triumph Church Pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr. Sheffield initially joined the City Council in 2013, becoming its youngest member ever, and later advanced to Council president.

Tickets for the swearing-in are available online at detroitopera.org on a first-come, first-served basis. Further details about the event can be found at risehigherdetroit.com/investiture.
