Israeli Government Votes to Shut Down Army Radio After 75 Years

The Israeli cabinet has voted to shut down Army Radio, a station that has been on air for 75 years. The closure is set to take effect no later than March 1.

Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara stated on Monday that the government's move to close Army Radio is "part of a broader effort to undermine public broadcasting in Israel and to restrict freedom of expression."

She further commented that the decision "is not supported by the required factual and professional basis, raises concerns that it is tainted by improper considerations, and its advancement is contrary to the law."

These remarks were made prior to a government meeting where Defense Minister Israel Katz introduced the proposal, which received unanimous approval.

Legal Opposition Emerges

Following the announcement, the Movement for Quality Government in Israel filed a petition with the High Court of Justice.

The organization claims the decision lacks a proper factual basis and involves improper motives. It argues that closing the station would significantly damage freedom of expression and press freedom in the country.

Additionally, the NGO asserts that shutting down Army Radio should require legislation passed by the Knesset, not just a cabinet decision. It warns this action is part of a wider campaign to weaken democratic institutions and independent media in Israel.
