The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office has released the identity of a man who died following an officer-involved shooting in Hollywood. He was 38-year-old Juan Guerrero Rojo.
Police Response Details
According to authorities, Hollywood Division officers were called to an apartment complex on North Bronson Avenue near Sunset Boulevard at 3:35 p.m. on Thursday. The call reported a potentially suicidal individual.
Police stated that the caller, identified as Guerrero Rojo, indicated he was armed with a knife, threatening self-harm, speaking to ghosts, and warned he would harm anyone approaching his door.
Confrontation and Shooting
Officers approached the apartment and announced their presence. They heard yelling from inside before Guerrero Rojo suddenly opened the door. Police moved back and attempted further communication.
The LAPD reported that shortly after, Guerrero Rojo exited the apartment and ran toward officers while holding a large kitchen knife. This led to an officer-involved shooting and the deployment of a less-lethal foam launcher nearly simultaneously.
Emergency medical services transported Guerrero Rojo to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. No officers or bystanders were harmed during the incident.
Investigators collected the knife from the scene as evidence.
