On Christmas Eve, a group of dedicated volunteers gathered at the Salvation Army's Pittsburgh Temple and Worship Center to assemble meals for elderly residents and families.
Community Effort
Approximately 80 individuals participated in the initiative, preparing around a thousand meals during the event. These meals were distributed to more than 38 different locations, including care facilities and private homes.
The Salvation Army's Family Caring Center, which assists families experiencing homelessness, was among the recipients of the food packages.
Widespread Distribution
Residents in numerous Pittsburgh-area communities such as Baldwin, Blawnox, Dormont, East Liberty, Etna, Homestead, Lawrenceville, McKees Rocks, McKeesport, Monroeville, Northside, Penn Hills, Ross Township, South Side, and West Mifflin received the prepared meals.
For many volunteers, helping during the holiday season has become an annual tradition.
Volunteer Perspective
"I initially met the Salvation Army when I was a volunteer as a teenager, so I have a deep appreciation for anyone who is willing to give their time to give a blessing to someone else," said Salvation Army Divisional Commander Marcus Jugenheimer.
He noted that the organization typically experiences increased volunteer participation during the holiday period.
