A 64-year-old man has died from injuries sustained in the December 21 apartment fire, bringing the death toll to two. The fire also critically injured a juvenile.

Montgomery Fire Rescue District Fire Chief K.R. Peoples has confirmed a second death resulting from the fire at Woodley Terrace Apartments on December 21.

Johnny Payne, aged 64, passed away at 3:48 p.m. on December 23, two days after the incident. The blaze had already claimed the life of an 8-year-old boy and left another young person in critical condition.

"Montgomery Fire Rescue vehicles were called to the two-story apartment fire on the 3900 block of Woodley Road at 8:09 a.m.," Peoples stated. Upon arrival, rescue teams discovered three injured individuals and transported them to a nearby hospital. The 8-year-old boy was pronounced dead upon arrival at the medical facility.

Peoples further noted that no other injuries to apartment residents or responding firefighters have been reported.

The Montgomery Fire Rescue Bureau of Investigations is currently working to determine the cause of the fire.
