Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has ended her campaign for New York governor and announced she will not seek reelection to Congress, citing concerns about a prolonged primary.

Stefanik Withdraws from New York Governor Race, Will Not Run for Congress Again

On Friday, Representative Elise Stefanik made a significant announcement regarding her political future. The Republican lawmaker, known for her alignment with former President Donald Trump, revealed she is halting her bid for the governorship of New York and will not pursue another term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Stefanik's Statement on Social Media

In a post on the platform X, Stefanik explained her reasoning. She stated, "it is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources to spend the first half of next year in an unnecessary and protracted Republican primary, especially in a challenging state like New York."

Her decision comes as she was poised to compete against Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County Executive, in what many anticipated would be a contentious Republican primary. The winner would have faced the incumbent Democratic Governor, Kathy Hochul, in the general election.

Republican Party Response

Following the announcement, Ed Cox, the Chairman of the New York State Republican Party, expressed respect for Stefanik's choice and acknowledged her contributions. In a formal statement, Cox said, "Bruce Blakeman has my endorsement and I urge our State Committee and party leaders to join me. Bruce is a fighter who has proven he knows how to win in difficult political terrain."
