Trump's North Carolina Visit Focuses on Economy

On Friday, President Donald Trump made a trip to the swing state of North Carolina, aiming to reassure voters about his economic management as midterm elections approach that may pose challenges for his party.

"Yesterday, it was announced that inflation is far lower than anybody expected," Trump told the crowd, referencing government data showing a 2.7% rise in consumer prices for November compared to last year. "I told you!"

Despite rising prices and increased unemployment, Trump faces an uphill battle. A recent Reuters/Ipsos survey indicated only 33% of American adults approve of his economic handling.

Trump asserted that his policies are setting the stage for economic growth, blaming any current difficulties on Democratic opposition. He highlighted achievements such as reducing gasoline costs, implementing tariffs that bring billions to the U.S. Treasury, and securing foreign investment pledges worth hundreds of billions.

Republicans are concerned that economic issues might hurt their prospects in next November's elections, which will determine control of the House and Senate during the remainder of Trump's term.

Democrats counter that Trump has mishandled the economy, a key issue from his previous campaign.

The event took place in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, a city represented by Democrat Don Davis in the House, who faces a difficult re-election in 2026 due to redistricting. The state is also gearing up for a closely watched Senate race that year.

North Carolina is a battleground state with tight elections, though Trump has won it in 2016, 2020, and 2024. This stop is part of his journey to his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida for the holiday season.

Trump received positive news from Thursday's Consumer Price Index report for November, noting smaller increases in housing and food costs, and a decline in egg prices. However, the report also showed spikes in other areas like beef and electricity prices.
