U.S. Government Appeals Court Ruling on Harvard Funding

WASHINGTON, Dec 19 (Reuters) - The U.S. government has formally challenged a judicial decision that prevented the Trump administration from halting approximately $2.2 billion in grants allocated to Harvard University, ensuring the Ivy League institution retains its research funding.

Appeal Filed Near Deadline

On Thursday, the administration submitted its appeal notice, approaching the 60-day deadline. The case will now proceed to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston for further review.

Legal Victory for Harvard

In September, U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston ruled in favor of Harvard, delivering a significant legal win. This decision aimed to resolve the ongoing dispute between the White House and the prestigious university.

Harvard, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has been a key target in the administration's efforts to use federal funding to influence U.S. universities. President Donald Trump has criticized these institutions for what he describes as antisemitic and "radical left" ideologies.

The administration revoked numerous grants to Harvard researchers, alleging the school did not adequately address harassment of Jewish students on campus, which led Harvard to file a lawsuit.
