On Thursday, December 18, a shooting occurred at a Kroger location in Westland, resulting in the death of Alvin Echols.
Victim Remembered for Kindness
A GoFundMe page established by his cousin, Janee Echols, describes him as a generous and warm individual. "(He) was known for his generosity and warmth, always giving to others and bringing light to those around him. He was a loving son, brother, and friend, and his absence leaves a void that cannot be filled," the page states.
His sister, Amanda Stamper, shared with CBS, "My brother was out doing a good deed. In his eyes, he was doing god's work to help children get a good Christmas, and his life was taken while doing it."
Incident Details
Echols was volunteering as a Salvation Army bell ringer outside the Kroger at 36430 Ford Road when he was shot. Westland Police reported arriving around 6:10 p.m. to find the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, he died at the scene.
The suspect fled but was apprehended early Friday morning. Police indicated the victim and suspect were acquainted prior to the incident.
Organizational Responses
Kroger issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the event. The Salvation Army referred to it as a "tragic incident" and mentioned prayers for those affected, including the victim's family and the Westland community. Both organizations noted cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
The GoFundMe campaign, verified on Friday, December 19, highlights the family's profound grief, especially given the proximity to Christmas. As of 8 p.m. that day, it had raised over $2,900 toward a $12,000 goal.
