Claudio Neves Valente used international SIM cards, multiple license plates, and careful planning to avoid detection for six days after the Brown University shooting, but was ultimately identified through a rental car and found deceased.

Brown University Shooting Suspect Evaded Capture Through Sophisticated Tactics

Suspect's Elaborate Evasion Methods

For nearly a week, Claudio Neves Valente successfully avoided what became the nation's most extensive search operation. He employed advanced counter-surveillance strategies, including the use of foreign SIM cards, various license plates, and credit cards under different identities to disappear following the incident at Brown University.

Providence Police documents reveal that Valente's escape was carefully orchestrated. Despite the presence of over 800 security cameras across the Brown campus, he deliberately chose an older building with minimal surveillance. In the weeks before the attack, he repeatedly scouted the area and parked his rented vehicle under large trees to hide it from both aerial and ground-level cameras.

Law Enforcement Challenges

U.S. Attorney Leah Foley described Valente as highly skilled in concealing his movements. She explained that he utilized European SIM cards and a specific type of phone that prevented real-time location tracking by authorities. Valente, a Portuguese national with U.S. permanent residency, also removed the front license plate from his rental car and covered the original Florida plate with an old Maine plate at the rear, effectively avoiding automated plate readers.

Retired Boston Police Superintendent Dan Linskey commented on the investigative difficulties: "Not only was he trying to get away from the license plate readers that possibly could detect him, but also avoiding toll detectors and even just good old-fashioned police work where someone sees the car."

Breakthrough and Conclusion

The turning point came when a vigilant former Brown student, known only as "John," recognized Valente before the shooting and shared information online. This led investigators to a gray Nissan Sentra with Florida plates. Linskey noted: "All the pieces of the puzzle came together. Once they were able to positively identify a vehicle plate associated with him in the area of Providence, run that plate and find out if it's a rental car in Boston, they were able to identify who had rented it and gather a positive identification on them pretty quickly."

Valente had used his actual Florida driver's license to rent the vehicle in Boston, allowing authorities to confirm his identity. The search then focused on a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, where Valente was discovered deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha emphasized that Valente's ability to evade capture stemmed from his apparent knowledge of surveillance avoidance techniques.
