A Beloved Cincinnati Holiday Tradition
For decades, families in Cincinnati have gathered to witness a special holiday attraction that first appeared in 1946. The elaborate model train display was initially installed in the lobby of the Cincinnati Gas & Electric Building at Fourth and Main streets.
Historical Origins and Growth
The O-gauge replica of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was constructed in 1936 as a traveling promotional exhibit before finding a permanent home in Cincinnati. While many engines date back to the original setup, the presentation has significantly expanded over time. It now encompasses 1,000 feet of track, featuring 50 engines and 300 rail cars.
Generations of enthusiasts, both young and old, have watched with fascination as the miniature trains navigate through detailed 1:48-scale landscapes. These scenes depict rustic Norman Rockwell-style settings with houses and buildings.
Modern Home and Annual Return
In 2011, Duke Energy, which succeeded CG&E, transferred the train collection to the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal. Each year, the Duke Energy Holiday Trains make their seasonal appearance, maintaining their status as one of Cincinnati's most treasured holiday customs.
