Columbus Businesses Adapt to ICE Enforcement with Community Support Initiatives

Community Response to Immigration Enforcement

In Columbus, Ohio, various establishments have adjusted their operations to assist customers who may be affected by recent enforcement actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. These measures aim to provide safer alternatives for those concerned about potential encounters.

Supermarket Initiatives

La Plaza Tapatia, a grocery store on Georgesville Road, announced on December 19 that it would offer delivery services. This decision came as reports indicated increased activity by ICE and Homeland Security Investigations agents in the area. According to immigration advocates and legal professionals, approximately 15 to 20 arrests occurred daily on December 17 and 18, though exact figures remain uncertain.

By December 20, the store reported being inundated with delivery requests, asking for patience as staff worked to fulfill orders. Shortly after, they expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support received.

"We are truly overwhelmed by the countless messages, texts and calls from Americans eager to volunteer and support our delivery efforts," the post read. "In these challenging times, it's incredibly heartening to see this level or compassion and solidarity."

"We hope the immigrant community recognizes that so many people stand with us, see us, and do not support what is happening in our city and across the country."

The response was so substantial that La Plaza Tapatia temporarily met all its delivery needs through volunteer assistance.

Restaurant Support

Several Mexican restaurants in Columbus also demonstrated solidarity through social media communications during the same period. Fronteras Mexican Cuisine, located on the Far East Side, posted on December 19 encouraging concerned customers to utilize takeout options designed for safety.

"We know our community is experiencing difficult and uncertain times," the restaurant wrote. "That's why today we want to tell you something very clear from the heart: Your safety and well-being are the most important thing."

La Loma in Upper Arlington shared a message on December 18 emphasizing their commitment to providing a welcoming environment.

"La Loma is and will continue to be a place where tables are shared with tranquility, respect and togetherness," the post read.
