Residents of Western Washington are preparing for more stormy conditions over the holiday period, with forecasts indicating possible power interruptions.
This new weather threat follows almost two weeks of extreme conditions that brought record flooding and intense rainfall to the region.
The already waterlogged soil heightens the danger of trees toppling, which could impact both underground and above-ground electrical infrastructure.
Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and local media are monitoring the approaching system, expected to bring winds exceeding 50 miles per hour to parts of western Washington.
"We understand the significance of the holidays for family gatherings and how challenging power loss can be, particularly after recent outages from strong winds and heavy precipitation. We are increasing staffing for response teams and urging customers to ready their homes and emergency supplies now," stated PSE.
Safety Recommendations from PSE:
Consider all downed wires as live. Maintain a distance of at least 35 feet from any fallen wire and report it to PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or emergency services.
When using portable heaters, ensure they are positioned away from curtains, furniture, and other flammable items.
Opt for flashlights over candles during outages.
Be mindful of carbon monoxide risks:
Generators should only be operated outdoors, away from windows, doors, and vents. Never use them inside buildings or enclosed spaces.
Avoid using gas ranges for heating or charcoal indoors for cooking or warmth.

Do not charge devices in a vehicle running in a closed garage.
Ensure natural gas appliances are properly maintained and used as directed by the manufacturer.
Flood Safety Guidelines:
If floodwaters cover your gas meter, contact PSE at 1-888-225-5773 immediately.
Avoid entering flooded basements, as submerged electrical components can be hazardous.
Recognize gas leak indicators: a sulfur-like odor, bubbling in water, or hissing sounds near equipment. If detected, evacuate the area, avoid creating sparks, and call 911 and PSE at 1-888-225-5773 from a safe location. Additional information is available at PSE.com/GasSafety.
