Motorists planning holiday journeys can anticipate significantly reduced fuel costs this Christmas season. According to Gas Buddy's December 16 analysis, the national average price for gasoline on December 25 is forecasted to reach $2.79, marking the most affordable level since 2020.
In Wisconsin, prices have been particularly low, averaging $2.47 as of December 22. This figure stands notably below the approximately $2.85 per gallon national average reported by AAA around the same time.
Patrick De Haan, Head of Petroleum Analysis at Gas Buddy, explained the seasonal trend in the report. "Refinery maintenance has wrapped up, supplies are rising, and winter demand is much lower than in summer — all of which help keep a lid on price," he said. "Provided there are no surprises; holiday travelers should see pump prices that come in a bit lower than last Christmas."
De Haan further noted that gasoline costs typically reach "near the lowest levels of the year" around the Christmas holiday period.
The favorable pricing coincides with AAA's projection of approximately 122 million people traveling nationwide for the year-end holidays. Of these travelers, an estimated 109 million are expected to complete their trips by automobile.
For those embarking on road trips, AAA has also issued guidance on optimal and least favorable driving times throughout the busy travel season. Travelers can consult the organization's comprehensive holiday travel guide for detailed scheduling advice.
