Democratic Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett, currently campaigning for a Senate seat, has raised doubts about the factual basis of border statistics presented by the Trump administration. This comes as the president promotes significant reductions in illegal border entries and claims no releases into the country.
Immigration Debate on National Television
During an interview on NBC News' Meet the Press Now, host Gabe Gutierrez noted immigration as a central concern in Texas. He pointed out that while Crockett has been critical of the president's deportation policies and ICE operations, many Trump supporters view his border performance positively, citing declining encounter numbers.
"Can you acknowledge that the president has been successful in reducing border encounters?" Gutierrez inquired.
Crockett's Response
"I recognize that reported border encounters have decreased," Crockett stated. "However, this administration hasn't demonstrated complete transparency with numerical data, as evidenced by recent revelations about inaccurate jobs reports."
She elaborated further:
What I can tell you is he has invoked a very inhumane way of carrying out immigration. What I can tell you is that he has not worked through the Congress, and that what we need is comprehensive immigration reform. What I also can tell you is we have of people who have a historic number of people who have died in ICE custody since he's been in. What I also can tell you is that we have a historic number of American citizens who have been rounded up, and what I can also tell you, is that this Supreme Court unfortunately, has given him carte blanche to o after people because of an accent or because of what they look like, and that is wrong.
The discussion was broadcast on NBC News' Meet the Press Now program.
