Police Shooting Incident in Louisville

Deputy Chief Ryan Bates reported that an individual was wounded during an encounter with Louisville Metro Police officers in the Gardiner Lane vicinity.

According to Bates, LMPD officers were performing a traffic stop in a parking lot along the 3000 block of Bardstown Road at approximately 12:28 a.m. on December 19. During this operation, a Chevrolet Tahoe and another SUV were observed traveling northbound on Bardstown Road, moving parallel to each other. The Tahoe was positioned in the southbound lanes, while the SUV occupied the northbound lanes.

The two vehicles "appeared to be in some type of altercation," Bates stated.

As the cars approached the location of the traffic stop, gunshots were heard, Bates said. An LMPD officer issued commands to halt, and one officer discharged their firearm. The SUV subsequently fled the scene, and its current whereabouts remain unknown.

Officers instructed the man inside the Tahoe to relinquish his weapon and provided medical assistance after he complied. The driver suffered gunshot wounds to both arms and was transported to UofL Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. No police personnel were harmed during the incident.

This event represents the second officer-involved shooting involving LMPD within a 24-hour period in Louisville.

Bates mentioned that investigators retrieved a handgun from inside the Tahoe.

"It is unclear at this time what led to the altercation between the two motorists," Bates remarked.

The investigation will be overseen by LMPD's Public Integrity Unit.
