Charges Filed Against Police Chief

Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden has announced that a police chief from New Jersey is facing serious criminal charges related to an event in Boston's Back Bay area this past September.

Carmen Veneziano, who serves as the police chief in Totowa, was formally indicted on Thursday. The charges include one count of kidnapping and three counts of domestic assault and battery.

Details of the Alleged Incident

According to authorities, the incident occurred on the morning of September 14. It is alleged that Veneziano confined a woman inside a hotel room in the Back Bay neighborhood and physically assaulted her.

Veneziano was taken into custody on Friday without any complications. He waived extradition proceedings and will be transferred to Massachusetts for a court hearing.

Administrative Actions Taken

Totowa Mayor John Coiro made a public announcement regarding the situation. On the town's official Facebook page, he stated that Veneziano would be suspended "without pay until the legal process is concluded."

Additionally, Mayor Coiro indicated that he will be appointing an interim police chief to handle departmental duties during this period.

The arraignment for Veneziano is scheduled to take place in Suffolk Superior Court on Monday.
