On Friday evening, two trains operated by New Jersey Transit collided along the Montclair-Boonton Line, officials reported. The incident occurred at approximately 6:47 p.m. near Bay Street in Montclair.
Injuries and Response
Seventeen individuals sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, according to authorities. A minor derailment followed the contact between the trains.
NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri and senior staff members were present at the scene, as confirmed in a social media update from the agency.
Investigation Underway
NJ Transit police are conducting the initial investigation. Officials stated they are awaiting the arrival of the National Transportation Safety Board to perform an independent inquiry.
"Our primary focus during this incident is the safety of our passengers, our employees and our first responders," officials emphasized in their statement.
Representative Tom Kean acknowledged the incident in a social media post, noting multiple reports of injuries.
Service Disruptions
Service on the Montclair-Boonton Line has been suspended in both directions. NJ Transit is honoring rail tickets on its bus lines as an alternative for affected passengers.
