Northwestern Ruritan Club Hosts Annual Holiday Gathering and Outlines 2026 Initiatives

On December 8, the Northwestern Ruritan Club organized its festive holiday dinner and meeting at Northwestern High School in West Salem.

Leadership Transition and Key Address

During the proceedings, Rick Dilyard, serving as the 2026 Ohio District governor, officiated the installation of the club's officers for the year 2026. Dilyard highlighted the need to uphold moral principles and inspire youth to value the nation's liberties.

Festive Program and Community Updates

The event commenced with attendees singing "America" followed by an invocation delivered by Jim Johnson. A ham dinner prepared by the school's culinary staff was enjoyed, accompanied by a performance of Christmas carols from the Northwestern High School Choir under the direction of Leslie Andrews.

Treasurer Chuck Beck provided a report on the "Huskie Brigade" initiative, which successfully assembled and dispatched care packages to 24 soldiers from the Northwestern area. Beck acknowledged the club members' donations and volunteer efforts. Additionally, he referenced receiving documentation from the State Highway Department related to the club's planned participation in a roadside cleanup along St. Rt. 301 from Pleasant Home to Lattasburg in 2026.

Veteran Recognition Efforts

An update on the "Husky Salute Squad" was presented by Kevin and Joyce Keener. The squad participated in the "National Wreaths Across America Day Ceremony" on December 13, honoring 654 known veterans' graves across seven cemeteries within the Northwestern School District. The opening ceremony at the West Salem American Legion Hall featured the West Salem Legion Rifle Squad, with assistance from the Northwestern High School FFA and other volunteers in placing wreaths.

Future Engagement and Awareness

Numerous members registered to volunteer for the Salvation Army bell-ringing event at Buehler's Milltown Store on December 16. It was observed that awareness of the Ruritan Club and its activities among Northwestern students is currently limited, with aspirations to enhance future outreach and participation.

The club's next dinner meeting is planned for 6:30 p.m. on January 12 at Northwestern High School, where committees will deliberate on annual plans. A directors' meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on the same date.
