Shooting Probe Halts CTA Loop Service Amid Safety Plan Scrutiny

A shooting investigation has stopped all CTA trains at Washington/Wells in the Loop on Tuesday morning, disrupting service as the transit agency faces federal pressure to strengthen its safety measures.

Shooting Probe Halts CTA Loop Service Amid Safety Plan Scrutiny

Chicago police reported that a shooting investigation brought CTA train operations in the Loop to a standstill on Tuesday morning.

Trains Halted at Washington/Wells

All CTA trains were held at the Washington/Wells station while authorities conducted their investigation. Video footage from the location depicted a stationary Pink Line train surrounded by police officers, with CTA personnel visible on the platform.

This incident occurs as the Chicago Transit Authority is under increasing scrutiny to develop a more robust safety strategy. Last week, the Federal Transit Administration rejected the CTA's newly implemented safety plan, which proposed additional police presence, private security, and K-9 units. The plan also aimed to expand a voluntary program allowing off-duty officers to patrol the system.

However, the FTA stated that the measures are insufficient and urged the agency to adopt more aggressive actions to reduce crime and protect passengers.

Service Disruptions and Alternatives

The investigation has caused significant service interruptions in the Loop. The CTA announced the following operational adjustments:

- Pink Line trains are running between Polk and 54th/Cermak in both directions.

- Orange Line service is operating between Roosevelt and Midway in both directions.

- Brown Line trains are running between Merchandise Mart and Kimball in both directions.

- Green Line service is operating between Roosevelt and Clinton in both directions.

The CTA has deployed shuttle buses to facilitate connections at affected stops.
