Snohomish County Cities Secure $3.3M for Road Safety Enhancements

Federal Funding Boosts Local Road Safety

Three municipalities in Snohomish County have been allocated a combined $3.3 million to enhance transportation safety. This funding originates from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All initiative.

Everett's Multimodal Safety Initiative

Everett is set to receive $1.2 million. This award will support the updating of an Active Transportation Plan, the development of a safety and operations strategy for the Evergreen Way corridor, and a pilot program for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Key outcomes will include a comprehensive plan for bicyclist and pedestrian networks, prioritized improvements for Evergreen Way with associated costs and timelines, and an ITS pilot utilizing AI video detection and modern signal controllers to gather traffic performance data for evaluation.

Mill Creek Focuses on Vulnerable Users

Mill Creek has been granted $1.8 million, aimed at prioritizing the safety of vulnerable roadway users. The funds will facilitate demonstration activities and planning efforts, such as testing quick-build protected bike lanes and enhanced crossings. Additionally, the city will conduct a study of the 35th Avenue corridor, develop Safe Routes to School plans, perform a citywide lighting assessment, and launch an education and enforcement campaign. Evaluations of separated bike lanes and solar-powered rapid-flashing beacons will inform long-term design decisions.

Mukilteo's Comprehensive Safety Plan

Mukilteo will use its $300,000 award to create a citywide Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. This involves analyzing crash data and high-injury networks, engaging the public, identifying prioritized safety countermeasures, and outlining cost and implementation phases. The final plan will be ready for adoption to reduce serious injuries and fatalities among bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists.

Since its enactment in 2021, the Safe Streets and Roads For All program has supported over 1,600 transportation projects across the state, encompassing road, bridge, and port improvements.
