Authorities in South Brunswick are conducting an investigation into a break-in at a local church that occurred shortly before Christmas.
According to police reports, the incident was uncovered on the morning of December 22 when members of the congregation arrived for Mass at St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, located in the Monmouth Junction area.
Investigators stated that the intruders caused extensive damage inside the building, including breaking through ceiling panels, damaging walls, and forcing open storage areas. They also made off with the church's weekly collection funds.
Police Chief Raymond Hayducka has appealed to the community for assistance with the case.
"This is Christmas week, a special time filled with so much excitement," Hayducka said in a statement. "The acts of this suspect are disgraceful. We will use all resources to track this suspect down."
Detectives from the South Brunswick Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office are pursuing multiple leads in the investigation.
Local residents, particularly those living near Kingston Lane and Georges Road, are being asked to check any home security footage from between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on December 21.
