In the days leading up to Christmas, southern France is grappling with significant flooding.
Exceptional Flooding Reported
On Tuesday, the French warning service Vigicrue announced that the Hérault department has been affected by what it termed "exceptional flooding" in the vicinity of Montpellier.
Local prefect Chantal Mauchet stated the situation is probably the most severe in over three decades.
Impact and Response
Despite water levels beginning to fall, the highest alert remains active for the region. Numerous homes lost power, and many roads were submerged. Mauchet said, "Getting around remains very difficult." She also noted, "However, there were no casualties."
Heavy rainfall caused flooding in sections of Montpellier itself. As a precaution, the Christmas market, public parks, and the zoo have stayed closed.
