An 18-year-old high school senior has come forward with allegations of being physically assaulted by a school resource officer while on a school bus. The incident occurred outside Langston Hughes High School after the bus driver requested that the student disembark.
According to the student, Lanier Johnson-Hunt, the officer continued to use force even after he was handcuffed, including slapping him. He also stated that he did not receive prompt medical attention for his injuries.
"I really don't remember what I was thinking. I just know I was scared in that moment," Johnson-Hunt said during a Tuesday news conference, where he displayed burn marks on his chest that he attributes to the taser.
His family and legal representatives are calling for accountability from Fulton County Schools. Attorney Harry Daniels raised concerns about the bus driver's actions, questioning, "He was just on the bus. He rode the bus. So our question is, does this bus driver have a memory issue?"
Another attorney, Gerald Griggs, described the situation as "atrocious," noting that the student was simply in the right place at the right time.
Johnson-Hunt was arrested and faces charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and obstruction, along with a 10-day school suspension.
A spokesperson for Fulton County Schools confirmed that the officer involved has been removed from active duty pending an investigation, emphasizing that the district is taking the matter seriously.
