Arrest Made Following Downtown Shooting
Authorities in Athens have taken a suspect into custody related to a homicide that took place in the city's downtown area. The arrest occurred on December 19, the day after the incident.
Police have charged Jamarioun Clark with the murder of Anargyros Mantas. The 26-year-old victim was discovered with gunshot wounds at the crossing of W. Broad Street and Pulaski Street on December 18.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Mantas injured in the roadway. He was subsequently taken to a medical facility for care but did not survive.
Following an investigation, Clark, a 22-year-old from Madison, was identified as a suspect. Warrants were issued for his arrest on multiple charges including aggravated assault, felony murder, and firearm-related offenses.
His apprehension in Newton County was facilitated through collaboration with several law enforcement agencies, including the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Madison Police Department, Covington Police Department, Newton County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed by officials, and the inquiry is ongoing.
