Vehicle Incident on I-580
On Tuesday afternoon, a significant traffic incident occurred on Interstate 580 in Castro Valley, involving multiple vehicles. The California Highway Patrol reported that an unoccupied vehicle detached from a tow truck and landed on nearby BART tracks.
Crash Details and Response
The collision took place shortly before 3 p.m. on the westbound lanes near Eden Canyon Road. According to CHP investigators, the car was being transported by the tow truck when it became dislodged during the accident sequence.
The tow truck operator sustained serious injuries in the crash and required hospital transport. Medical personnel are currently evaluating the driver's condition.
Transportation Disruptions
The incident created substantial travel challenges during the evening rush hour. Multiple lanes on both sides of I-580 were temporarily closed to facilitate emergency response and cleanup operations. These restrictions remained in effect until approximately 6 p.m.
BART service experienced immediate interruptions between Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton stations. Although transit officials restored operations around 6 p.m., significant delays persisted as trains operated on a single track through the affected area.
Recovery Operations
Emergency crews worked for several hours to secure and remove the vehicle from the transit tracks. A specialized crane was deployed to safely extract the car without causing additional damage to infrastructure.
The circumstances leading to the multi-vehicle collision remain under active investigation by authorities.
