Parking Changes at Salt Lake City Courthouse
Public parking at the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse in Salt Lake City will be discontinued starting January 1, 2026, according to Utah State Courts officials. However, individuals displaying valid disability placards or license plates will receive a temporary exemption from this new policy.
"Those patrons should be aware that access will be subject to increased security screening and should plan additional time when traveling to the courthouse," the agency stated in a recent announcement.
Court representatives confirmed that while all public parking will eventually be eliminated at the facility, the specific termination date for disability parking accommodations will be established later. The decision to restrict parking was initially revealed last month as part of security enhancement measures.
"The goal is to ensure that access occurs in a way that maximizes safety for everyone in the courthouse," explained Chris Palmer, Utah State Courts' director of security.
Alternative transportation options include street parking, nearby building parking facilities, and public transit services. The courthouse is situated within a free-fare transit zone, making public transportation a viable option for visitors.
These parking restrictions do not affect jurors, court staff, or other authorized court users who will maintain their current access privileges.
