Authorities in Wilmington are currently looking into an incident involving potential gunfire at the Independence Mall.
Police Response to Firearm Reports
According to official information from the Wilmington Police Department, emergency calls were received around 3:45 p.m. on December 23 regarding an individual with a weapon at the shopping center.
"At least one person reported shots being fired," the police statement confirms. "WPD and partner agencies are on scene at the Independence mall located at 3500 Oleander Dr. gathering all of the facts. At this time we can not confirm that any shots were fired, and we have not received any reports of anyone injured."
Multiple law enforcement units from Wilmington and neighboring jurisdictions arrived at the location following the 911 alerts.
The investigation remains active as officers work to determine what exactly occurred at the retail complex.
