This past weekend, a hazardous situation unfolded on an Alpharetta roadway when a vehicle was spotted traveling in the wrong direction into oncoming traffic.
Traffic Stop Averts Disaster
Authorities report that an Alpharetta police officer managed to intercept the driver near the intersection of Cumming Street and Henderson Parkway. The officer narrowly avoided a collision with the oncoming vehicle.
The officer promptly conducted a traffic stop. Following an assessment and conversation with the driver, the individual was determined to be unfit to operate a vehicle.
Arrest and Charges
Police discovered the driver, identified as Nelson Burrion-Lopez, had active felony warrants in Gwinnett County. He was taken into custody and transported to the Alpharetta Detention Center before being transferred to Gwinnett County.
Burrion-Lopez now faces several charges, including driving under the influence (DUI less safe), driving on the wrong side of the roadway, and operating a vehicle without a valid license.
Safety Reminder
While no injuries resulted from this incident, officials emphasize the situation could have ended tragically. With the holiday season ongoing, Alpharetta police are reminding motorists to arrange for safe transportation if consuming alcohol, such as using rideshare services or designating a sober driver.
